Houston Needs New Stadiums
A sports advisory committee recommended that Houston build new stadiums for baseball and basketball and renovate the Astrodome for football. How the $625 million construction tab would be paid was not specified.
The “preferred plan” calls for construction of a $250 million baseball-only stadium for the Astros across the street from the existing Astrodome. Renovation of the Astrodome to expand capacity and provide better seating closer to the playing field for football would cost $200 million. A $175 million basketball arena would be built downtown for the Rockets.
