Pendleton Slams Marlins Past Cards

Terry Pendleton’s grand slam following the ejection of St. Louis pitcher Andy Benes rallied the Florida Marlins to their eighth straight win, a 5-2 victory over the visiting Cardinals.
Benes had a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning when he hit Gary Sheffield with a pitch, clearing both benches and resulting in the ejection of both players.
Reliever T.J. Mathews walked the next batter to load the bases. Pendleton then hit his fourth career grand slam.
Braves 9, Pirates 3 Atlanta
Tom Glavine won his 10th consecutive home decision against Pittsburgh, allowing three hits in six shutout innings for Atlanta.
Glavine (4-3), unbeaten against the Pirates in Atlanta, struck out four and walked two, helping the Braves win for the eighth time in nine games.
Giants 2, Phillies 1 Philadelphia
Matt Williams homered in the seventh inning to snap a tie and three San Francisco pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in a win over Philadelphia.
With the score tied 1-1 in the seventh, Williams hit a 1-0 pitch from Sid Fernandez (2-3) deep into the left-field seats for his ninth homer.
Barry Bonds had two singles, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games.
Cubs 6, Astros 0 Chicago
Steve Trachsel gave up one hit - a leadoff double in the first inning - for his first career shutout as Chicago topped Houston.
After Brian Hunter opened the game with a double, Trachsel (3-2) gave up a walk in the second inning before retiring 14 straight.
Padres 5, Mets 2 San Diego
Fernando Valenzuela held New York to five hits over 6 innings, his longest outing for San Diego, and Brian Johnson drove in four runs as the Padres beat the Mets.
Expos 3, Dodgers 2 Los Angeles
David Segui hit a game-tying double in the ninth and Darrin Fletcher followed with a sacrifice fly as Montreal rallied to beat Los Angeles.
