Events Raise Funds For Spokane Symphony
As the Spokane Symphony’s 50th anniversary season concludes, the Spokane Symphony Associates deserve recognition for their fundraising efforts.
Since 1963, SSA volunteers have contributed more than $1 million to the symphony. People of all ages, from teens to retired citizens, have joined SSA chapters throughout the Inland Northwest to raise funds through a variety of community events.
Here are three upcoming events:
The SSA’s annual Luncheon and Style Show is Thursday at the Crescent Court in downtown Spokane. Festivities begin at 11:15 a.m. with a social hour, followed by lunch at noon in Ballroom No. 1. The style show fashions are provided by J.C. Penney.
Tickets are $15.50; reservations are necessary by Monday. Call Karen Snyder, 924-2012.
From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the Symphony Home & Garden Sale will be at 7829 E. Gunning Lane in the Valley, sponsored by the Kozinksi Chapter.
Look for hand-crafted items, outdoor collectibles, plants and more.
Also on Saturday, a symphony benefit garage sale, sponsored by the Thulean Chapter, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the corner of High Drive and 21st. A variety of items will be available.
Fund-raisers
The Wishing Star’s third annual Playhouse Dream Show continues through May 19 at the North Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Target stores. Raffle tickets are on sale for a chance to win one of six full-size backyard playhouses on display.
The Wishing Star Foundation works to grant wishes to children in our area suffering from life-threatening diseases.

Another Wishing Star fund-raiser is a Benefit Night, May 23, at Swackhammer’s, 21 E. Lincoln Road.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m., festivities will include a bachelor auction (a silent bid for some of the area’s most eligible bachelors), raffle prizes and giveaways. All proceeds benefit the Wishing Star Foundation.

More than 35 restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses, wineries and breweries will present their specialties at a food-tasting event and auction called “Taking A Bite Out of Hunger” on May 22, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Spokane Arena, 720 W. Mallon.
Clinkerdagger and Washington Trust Bank are sponsoring the event with all proceeds to benefit the Spokane Food Bank which works with the region’s nonprofit agencies to distribute food and commodities to our needy neighbors.

The seventh annual US West Cellular/ Kootenai Medical Center Foundation “Best Ball - Best Call” golf tournament is May 24 at Twin Lakes Village. Proceeds benefit the Clare Chapman Memorial Message Center.
Fees are $50, which includes golf, beginning at 9 a.m., lunch and a chance to win prizes, including a new Ford Contour.

Community events
The house that women built will be dedicated at 4 p.m. today. The Women’s House was entirely built by more than 800 women who volunteered their time and expertise to Habitat for Humanity.
Karen Kelley, former news anchor at KXLY-TV, will officiate at the ceremony at Fourth and Haven. Mayor Jack Geraghty will also speak.
The Cheney Cowles museum, 2316 W. First Ave., will offer two arts events free to the public:
On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., internationally acclaimed artist Sue Coe will be the guest speaker at the final program of the Cheney Cowles Visiting Artist Series.
Using her art as an example, Coe will speak on “Drawing on Words: Images as Text, Text as Images.”
On May 22, Cheney Cowles offers the history of the Spokane Symphony to commemorate its 50th anniversary season.
The program and slide show will be presented by Kathryn DeLong, author of “Spokane Symphony 1945-1995: 50 Classic Years,” which documents the orchestra’s history. DeLong is also the features editor of The Spokesman-Review.
The event is part of the museum’s Wednesday Night Program Series, underwritten by the Johnston-Hanson Foundation of Spokane.

Spokane Delta Gamma alumni are sponsoring a garden fair Wednesday and Thursday to raise funds for the Lilac Blind Foundation to enhance the lives of the visually impaired.
The plant fair will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Camyn’s Greenhouse, 4317 S. Garfield. Cash or check payments are requested.

The 15th annual Interplayers Progressive Dinner held in April raised $5,450 toward Interplayers’ operating budget next season.
The evening began in the Davenport Hotel with champagne and hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner and dessert served in various Spokane homes.
Kudos to chairperson Katherine Gellhorn and her assistants, Gail Glass and Bud Cox, for the successful fund-raiser.
Family events
Families are invited to attend “Celebration of Home Birth” from noon to 3 p.m. today at the Manito Park Pavilion, 18th and Grand Boulevard.
The event includes a potluck picnic, games, children’s activities, music and prizes, sponsored by Inland Northwest Friends of Our Midwives.
Information will be available on midwifery and home birth as a safe and legal birthing option.

Grab a hammer and volunteer with Habitat For Humanity-Spokane, which needs families, groups and individuals who are at least 14 years old to help with construction, fund-raising and administration.
Habitat For Humanity-Spokane plans to build 13 houses this year for low-income families. Volunteer applications are available through Jeffrey Carrol, 534-2552.
On Saturday, learn to make prints with your child at Spokane Art School’s “Parent Child Printmaking Workshop.”
Artist and educator Molly Adolfae will teach a variety of printmaking techniques to do at home.
The workshop is 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the art school, 920 N. Howard. Tuition is $9 per person. To register, call 328-0900.
