Land Annex Going Before Review Board

A plan to annex 135 acres to the city of Spokane goes before the Boundary Review Board for consideration next week.

Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co. wants to develop an exhausted sand-and-gravel pit between the city limits, Government Way and Fort George Wright Drive.

“It’s an advantage to get city services and to be a part of the urban community,” said President Dan Murphy. “We hope to turn it into housing.”

If the annexation goes through, the land now zoned as semi-rural would be rezoned to a mix of residential, multi-family and commercial development, said Duane Coble of the city’s Planning Department.

Central Pre-Mix owns 132 of the 135 acres slated for annexation, Coble said, adding that he doesn’t know of any opposition to the plan.

Early development proposals call for 1,290 multi-family units and 25 acres of general commercial use.

The City Council approved the plan last December.

The Boundary Review Board will learn detals of the proposed annexation at Monday’s meeting, which starts at 3 p.m. in the Public Works Building Hearing Room, 1026 W. Broadway.

No public testimony will be taken. Anyone concerned about the proposal has until May 28 to ask the board to “invoke its jurisdiction” - which would require the board to thoroughly review the plan.

If the board OKs the plan, it goes back to the council for final consideration.
