Service Set Today For Jack Brasch

A funeral service for former Gonzaga University basketball captain Jack Brasch is planned for 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Brasch, 71, died Monday in Superior, Mont.

Brasch graduated from North Central High School, then captained the Bulldogs during the 1947-48 season, when they went to the NAIA national tournament.

He is survived by two daughters and four sons, including Sam Brasch, men’s basketball coach at Community Colleges of Spokane.

Skaife improves

Jerry Skaife, 52, was still in serious condition in the cardiac intensive care unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center Thursday night, although his family said his condition had improved.

The well-known Spokane basketball figure and CCS softball coach suffered a heart attack Tuesday night.

“Thank people for their thoughts and prayers,” said Skaife’s wife Janet, the Ferris girls basketball coach. “Ask them to continue the prayers.”

A hospital spokesperson said Skaife’s condition was serious but stable.

No visitors are allowed and calls will not go through to Skaife’s room. A Sacred Heart public relations spokesperson said the department will relay messages to the family. Calls can be made to 455-3081 until 5 p.m. today.

Soap Box spaghetti feed

Organizers of Spokane’s Soap Box Derby, scheduled for June 22 and 23, will hold a spaghetti feed Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The event will be used to raise funds to send local winners to Akron, Ohio, for the Soap Box Derby World Finals. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Contact Marchette Momb, 922-7144, for further information.
