S-R Business Section Ranked Among Best Newspaper Wins Sabew Award For Second Consecutive Year
The Spokesman-Review’s business section has been honored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers as one of the best in the nation.
Entries were submitted by a total of 93 publications. Nineteen daily newspapers and five business weeklies were chosen as winners by panels of judges who considered all aspects of business coverage.
The Spokesman-Review was selected as one of the five best sections among newspapers with daily circulation between 100,000 and 225,000. Other winners in that category were the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal, Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press and San Francisco Examiner.
The Spokane, St. Paul and Richmond papers also were honored last year, the first year SABEW sponsored the contest.
“Our business staff works hard and this recognition is most welcome,” said Chris Peck, editor of The Spokesman-Review. “The citation by SABEW moves us closer to our goal of simply being the best overall newspaper of our size in the country.”
Other winners included:
Circulation up to 100,000: Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times, Kalamazoo (Mich.) Gazette, The Modesto (Calif.) Bee and The Register-Guard of Eugene, Ore.
Circulation of 225,001-350,000: Detroit News, Kansas City (Mo.) Star, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, The Oregonian of Portland and San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News.
Circulation above 350,000: Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Denver Post, Seattle Times and Washington Post.
Weekly newspapers: Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s Detroit Business, Kansas City Business Journal, San Francisco Business Times and Washington Business Journal.
SABEW is a professional organization representing business editors and writers throughout North America.
The contest was established to help set standards and create role models for outstanding business journalism. Awards will be presented April 30 at the SABEW annual convention in New Orleans.
