Erick Strickland scored 19 points and Jaron Boone added 15 as Nebraska defeated Colorado State 91-83 in a first-round NIT game Thursday night in Fort Collins, Colo.
Nebraska, which limped into the tournament with a 17-14 record after losing 10 of its last 11 games, had seven players in double figures.
The Cornhuskers will play Washington State, a 92-73 winner over Gonzaga on Thursday, in the second round Tuesday.
DelMonte Madison led Colorado State (18-12) with 21 points. Nebraska shot 64 percent in the second half and held Colorado State scoring leader David Evans to nine points, two in the second half when Nebraska had a 52-38 scoring advantage.
St. Joseph’s 82, Iona 78
Mark Bass scored 22 points and Dmitri Domani added 21 as St. Joseph’s (16-12) beat Iona (21-8) at New Rochelle, N.Y.
Reggie Townsend added 13 points and Terrell Myers 11 for the Hawks, who play the winner of today’s Providence-Fairfield game next Tuesday in the second round.
