Three More Teams Earn Ncaa Berths

College men’s tournaments

Ivan Chappell made four free throws in the final 37.8 seconds Monday night as Virginia Commonwealth outlasted North Carolina-Wilmington (13-16) 46-43 to win the Colonial Athletic Conference championship at Richmond, Va.

The Rams (24-8), who also won the CAA regular season title with a 14-2 record in their first year in the league, earned an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament, their first trip since 1985.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference

At Albany, N.Y., tournament MVP Micheal Meeks scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as undermanned Canisius (19-10) beat Fairfield (20-9) 52-46 for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and it first NCAA tournament berth since 1957.

Missouri Valley Conference

At St. Louis, Tulsa (22-7) ended a decade of frustration in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, getting 18 points from Cordell Love in a 60-46 victory over top-seeded Bradley (22-7).

Tulsa (22-7), the No. 3 seed, which is moving to the WAC next season, earned its first title since 1986 and the Valley’s automatic NCAA berth.
