Maddux’s Struggles Continue In 3-2 Loss

Associated Press

National League

Greg Maddux’s winless streak reached five starts, his longest drought in five seasons, and Mark Clark pitched the New York Mets past the visiting Atlanta Braves 3-2 Wednesday night.

Maddux (5-5), coming off one of his worst outings ever, gave up eight hits and three runs - two of them earned - in seven innings.

Not since Maddux went seven starts without a win in 1991 has he gone so long without a victory. Since his last victory, he is 0-2 with three no-decisions.

Phillies 4, Cubs 3 Philadelphia

Sid Fernandez allowed only two hits in 5-2/3 innings and Gregg Jefferies and Todd Zeile hit consecutive home runs as Philadelphia ended a six-game losing streak with a win against Chicago.

Rockies 6, Astros 0 Denver

Marvin Freeman threw seven shutout innings and combined with three relievers on Colorado’s first shutout at Coors Field as the Rockies defeated Houston.

The shutout was the Rockies’ first in 103 games at Coors Field and third at home in franchise history.

Expos 8, Marlins 0 Montreal

Jeff Fassero allowed five hits in eight innings and Sherman Obando homered and drove in three runs to send Montreal past Florida.

Reds 9, Padres 4 San Diego

Eric Davis and Brett Boone hit two-run homers in the ninth inning to blow the game open as Cincinnati beat plummeting San Diego to sweep a three-game series.

Clearing the bases New York

Mets infielder Jose Vizcaino reportedly has vowed to avenge being hit on the knee by Atlanta Braves pitcher Steve Avery. Vizcaino told several New York and Atlanta reporters, “He’s going to pay. He hurt me, I’ll hurt him.”
