Old Letter Brings New Family News

Compiled From Wire Services

Jane Stewart just got a letter packed with news of family events 24 years ago.

The letter, postmarked March 17, 1972 and bearing an 8-cent stamp, was written by an aunt in Georgia, who has died.

The letter contained a baby picture of Stewart, a newspaper clipping about her cousin’s wedding and details of other family events.

“It’s still news to me, even though it’s 24 years late,” Stewart said.

The letter was among 2,000 pieces of mail stolen over a 20-year period by a former post office clerk who kept the mail at home the entire time. The man was sentenced in April to one year in prison.
