Eight Area Girls Players Selected For East All-Stars

Five players from the Greater Spokane League, two area B standouts and one from the Northeast A League have been selected for the renewal of the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association East vs. West All-Star game June 17 in Puyallup.

The games, to be contested in A-B and AA-AAA formats, were last played in 1992.

Lora Jolley of Lakeside, Andee Schmick of St. John-Endicott and Dawn Trowbridge of St. George’s are on the East A-B team.

On the AA-AAA are Jennifer Clark and Stacy Clinesmith of Mead, Jayme Morrisette and Jennifer Swinton of Ferris and Sydney Perno of University.

Clinesmith, the State AAA girls player of the year, Morrisette and Swinton also will play in the Northwest Shootout, an all-star game between Washington and Oregon teams June 23 in Portland. Schmick is an alternate.

No area boys were selected for the Washington-Oregon game.

Awards

Baseball player Jim Horner and Kelli Kamphouse, a member of women’s crew, have been named Washington State’s Pacific-10 Conference Medal winners as outstanding male and female athletes for 1995-96.

Winners are selected on scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Thirty-two WSU student-athletes made spring sports Pac-10 All-Academic teams. Those selected by sport:

Basketball

Curlew’s Wes Paul, a three-year, All-Panorama League choice who had 1,000 points and 600 assists in his career, received a full-ride scholarship to Powell (Wyo.) Junior College.

Football

Andy Bush, head football coach at Garfield-Palouse, has resigned to become the head coach at Mountlake Terrace, a member of the AAA WestCo League.

Bush, 37, had a 64-35 record in 10 years during two stints with the Vikings. The Hawks were 0-9 last season, 2-25 the last three.

Chris Norman of Gonzaga Prep, a 6-foot-3, 263-pound honorable mention All-Greater Spokane League offensive tackle, has signed a letter of intent to play at Central Washington.

Lakeside, the only member of the NEA without lights for its football field, is conducting a campaign to try and remedy that situation.

The Eagles are staging a raffle and accepting donations to raise $20,000 so then can install lights by this fall.

“We’re halfway there,” said athletic director/ football coach Glen Payne.

Donations of $100 will get the contributor’s name mounted on a light pole.

Softball

Sullivan Scoreboard of Spokane won a men’s Class C slowpitch national qualifier last weekend in Mount Vernon, Wash., to earn a spot in the Amateur Softball Association tournament Sept. 26-29 in Albuquerque.

Sullivan, which went 6-1 in the tournament, beating the Mercer Island Merchants 12-4 and 10-5 for the championship, were led by pitcher Ken Robinson, infielders Larry Barnes, Gregg Red and J.R. Bluff and outfielder Les Hall.

Track and field

The Comets Track Club in Pullman is looking for volunteers to help run the Region XIII Junior Olympics Track and Field Meet July 11-14 at Mooberry Track.

Miscellany

The West Coast Conference will add two women’s sports - golf and rowing - to its list of championship events this fall. It gives the WCC seven championship sports for women and six for men.
