Els Widens Lead
Ernie Els took only 23 putts in a 5-under-par 66 and lengthened his lead to five strokes midway through the Buick Classic in Harrison, N.Y.
Els’ 11-under 131 total tied the tournament record for best 36-hole score when the Westchester Country Club has played to a par 71, set by David Graham in 1976.
Tied for second were David Frost, who had a second-round 69 and Craig Parry, 66.
Emilee Klein shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Pat Bradley after the rain-delayed second round of the LPGA Oldsmobile Classic in East Lansing, Mich.
Klein, who has three top-10 finishes this season, stands at 10-under 134 midway though the tournament, which has been plagued by rain from the start. Rathdrum’s Tracy Hanson had a 73 for 141.
Tom Weiskopf’s eagle on the 15th hole pushed him to 4-under 68 and the first-round lead in the $1.1 million Pittsburgh Senior Classic at Midway, Pa.
Weiskopf held a one-stroke lead over Bob Eastwood and local favorite Arnold Palmer, who placed his approach shots around the pin all day in shooting a 3-under 69, Palmer’s second-best score of the season.
