Lakeland Teams Place At Social Studies Competition
Two eighth grade teams from Lakeland Junior High School recently took first and tenth place in the National Social Studies Olympiad. Team members and their scores are listed: Team One first place; Jacob Freeman (48), Lucas Hammond (47), Gavin Gardner (46), Jesse Schoch (46), Logan Graf (46), Brenn Flynn (46), Taylor Sbicca (45), Lance Davis (45), Nagib McGee (45), Shea Whitman (44), Kasha Ho (44), Pete Hamill (44), Josh Rurey (44), Kelly Winn (44), Carl Schrader (44). Team score: 459.
Team Two tenth place; Tosha Lewis (43), Jessica Andrews (43), Ana Mack (42), Meredith Bak (42), Katie Carper (42), Brandi Brumley (42), Seth Winters (42), Byron Scharenberg (41), Stacia Secretariat (41), Erik Schmidt (41). Team score: 410.
Jacob Freeman was one of three students out of 333 schools nationwide to score a 48 out of 50 points. Lakeland has competed in the annual multiple choice contest for 13 consecutive years, with four first place wins.
Michael Chapman, son of Dave and Bev Chapman of Hayden Lake, recently graduated from Pepperdine University with a degree in organizational communications.
Chapman, a 1992 Coeur d’Alene High School graduate, will be attending Gonzaga Law School this fall.
Two Lakeland High School seniors each recently recieved $500 scholarships from the Twin Lakes Village Scholarship Fund. Recipients were: Kerry Ellis, who maintains a 3.12 grade-point average, is a member of the National Honor Society and will be attending North Idaho College in the fall in pursuit of his nursing degree. Heather Goosey, who maintains a 3.53 grade-point average and ranks 16th in her class, plans to attend Montana State University and major in wildlife biology.
The scholarships are given to students based on their financial need and a desire to continue their education.
