At This Point, Clinton Might Agree

From Staff And Wire Reports

A survey of boat owners by a boating manufacturer shows that 85 percent of the males would rather go fishing than be president.

Nearly two-thirds of those responding to a tongue-in-cheek survey by Johnson and Evinrude outboards said they’d rather shut down the government for a national “Gone Fishing Day” than for a budget impasse.

More than two-thirds said they’d rather go fishing than be a professional athlete for a day - even if that athlete were the Super Bowl MVP.

Idaho fishing holiday

Area anglers should leave Saturday open on their calendars for Idaho’s statewide fishing holiday.

On that day, fishing licenses will not be required, and the Department of Fish and Game will sponsor clinics on angling skills, fish identification, outdoor ethics and more.

Among the places clinics are scheduled:

The Ledgerwood Picnic Area at Priest Lake State Park will offer a program for children ages 4-10 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The program will teach kids about fish habitat, the role of fish in relation to other wildlife, low-impact camping, and water and fire safety. Children will also have the opportunity to cast and fish for prizes. Poles and bait will be provided. Info - Christine Cary or Jill Cobb, (208) 443-2512.

The Lions Club Snow Creek Pond west of Bonners Ferry offers a program for kids through age 12 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Activities will include fishing clinics, prize giveaways and lectures by Forest Service personnel. Some fishing equipment will be provided for loan. The lake will be opened to the fishing public after noon. Info - Allen Chrisman, (208) 267-5561.

Coeur d’Alene’s Ponderosa Springs Golf Course will feature activities from 8-11 a.m.

Mullan Fish Hatchery, Round Lake State Park, will offer a program from 9 a.m. to noon.

Only license regulations will be suspended. All other state requirements will be in effect. All fishers must stay within the state size and limit guidelines, and may only fish in waters open by Saturday.

Curlew Lake plan canceled

A plan to introduce tiger muskie fish into Curlew Lake has been canceled because of a potential threat to a rare freshwater clam.

Biologists discovered that Curlew Lake is one of the few areas in Washington that still supports the California floater, a freshwater clam that is a candidate for listing as sensitive, threatened or endangered status.

Tiger muskie prey on fish species that the rare clams adhere to during their larval stage.
