Miami, Clemson Advance

Pat Burrell, the nation’s leading hitter as a freshman, hit a two-run homer and an RBI single in a 10-run third inning that carried Miami over top-seeded Alabama 15-1 in the second round of the College World Series on Sunday.

Burrell, who went 3 for 3 to improve his average to .486, hit his 22nd homer, doubled and walked twice.

The win moves the fifth-seeded Hurricanes (49-13) to Wednesday’s Bracket One semifinals against Tuesday’s survivor of a game matching Alabama (50-18) and Clemson, an 8-5 winner over Oklahoma State in 10 innings.

Clemson (50-16) advanced after Jason Embler’s RBI single keyed a three-run 10th, eliminating Oklahoma State (45-21).

Clemson came to Sunday’s game trying to avoid its fourth straight trip to Omaha without a win. The Tigers had lost eight straight CWS games dating back to 1977.

OSU had lost its first two at the CWS only once before in 18 trips, and that was in 1967.
