Nwc Pulls Upset, Holds Off Reardan
Basketball is a game of seconds. Or, as in the case of Tuesday night’s Northeast B District boys basketball nightcap, a game of split seconds.
Northwest Christian (16-9 overall and the Panorama League’s fourth seed) upset No. 2-ranked and Bi-County League top seed Reardan 45-43 after Travis Tichenal failed to launch his successful 3-point attempt before the end of regulation.
Tichenal’s shot almost spoiled an outstanding evening for the Crusaders’ Jeremy Affeldt, who scored 26 points on 11-for-13 field-goal shooting.
Affeldt did his best work down the stretch. With 1:20 left, the 6-foot-2 junior calmly nailed two free throws to put his team up 45-40, and with 55 seconds left he entered a scramble in the corner of the court and somehow came up with the ball for a steal.
Andy Crouch also played well for NWC, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. No other Crusader scored more than three points.
“They have been the key players and leaders for us this year as far as point production,” said Crusaders coach Danny Beard. “This was supposed to be a down year for us, but … we’ve really come together.”
Reardan had won 14 of its last 15 games, and was hurt by a subpar performance from guard Robb Soliday. Soliday scored 10 points on 3-for-16 shooting.
