Lewis Promoter Shows Concern

New York Daily News

Lennox Lewis, the last man to fight Tommy Morrison, will be brought in from “the sticks in Jamaica” and tested for HIV, his promoter said Sunday after learning Morrison was given an indefinite medical suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

“We’d better get our man in,” said Panos Eliades from London. “There’s no telephone where he is in the sticks of Jamaica, but there was a lot of blood in that fight.”

Lewis bloodied Morrison and stopped him in six rounds Oct. 7 at Atlantic City. Lewis has not fought since, either, though Eliades and the Englishman’s American promoter, Dino Duva, hope Monday to conclude a deal for him to meet Ray Mercer on May 10 at the Garden.

“It’s a sad situation if it’s true,” said Duva. “If Morrison is HIV-positive, it would be right for Lennox to take the test, just to clear his mind.”

There have been no documented cases of boxers infecting one another with the virus because of cuts.
