Fire, Library Measures On Ballot Tuesday

School bond and levy proposals have received most of the attention, but there will be a couple of other measures of interest to Valley voters on Tuesday’s ballot.

Spokane Valley Fire District 1 is seeking voter approval of a $5.7 million levy, and the Spokane County Library District is asking voters to OK a $7.66 million bond issue.

Valley Fire’s levy would fund more than half of the district’s projected $10.5 million budget in 1997.

The rest of the money will be used to buy new vehicles and remodel fire stations.

The district will replace a paramedic truck, a training van and a battalion chief’s car, Assistant Chief Karl Bold said. Station No. 1 is among the stations that would be remodeled.

The tax rate for the proposed levy is $1.49 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $149.

The library district’s 10-year bond would provide $3.49 million to build new libraries in Deer Park and Medical Lake, expand the libraries in Fairfield and Cheney, and improve other existing county libraries, including those in the Valley.

Another $2.14 million would pay for automated information systems, allowing access via computers to the Internet, along with dial-in service from home or business computers.

The system also would provide access from libraries at Valley middle schools and high schools.

And another $2 million would be spent on new library materials.

The tax rate would be 11 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.

After 1997, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $11 a year.
