Mariah Carey Nominated For Five American Music Awards
Mariah Carey surprisingly scored a leading five nominations for the 1997 American Music Awards.
The nominations were unusually diverse this year as Carey was the only artist to get more than two noms for the 24th AMAs, set for Jan. 27 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. A record 33 acts received just one nomination.
Carey is a bit of a surprise because Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion and other acts have sold more albums this year. However, Carey has always been an AMA fave, having taken home six American Music Awards since 1992.
Double nominees include Toni Braxton, the Fugees, Morissette, the Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots.
The nominees are chosen by data from SoundScan and trade publication Radio & Records.
