Jensen Joins Trio For Special Weekend Shows
When Brent Jensen left for Boise more than a year ago, he took one of the area’s most distinctive saxophone sounds.
And he reduced the Dozier-Jarvis-Jensen Quartet to a trio.
But it’s an ill wind that blows no one good, and this story contains two pieces of good news.
First, Jensen’s departure probably was instrumental in his winning a prestigious New Talent award from Jazzis Magazine; second, he will be back this weekend for a two-night reunion with his old Dozier-Jarvis Jensen playmates.
The Dozier-Jarvis-Jensen Quartet has been playing its broad mix of acoustic jazz and fusion since the early ‘80s, and their repertoire ranges from Cole Porter and John Coltrane to the Yellowjackets, Steps and Flim & the B.B.s.
In addition to Jensen, who once studied with Lee Konitz, the group includes pianist/arranger Dody Dozier, bassist Dick Dozier and drummer Dave Jarvis.
The group will play Friday and Saturday night at Hobart’s Jazz Lounge, 110 E. Fourth. Showtime is 9 p.m. and the cover is $3.
