Padres Drub Phils To Retain West Lead

Steve Finley went 4 for 5 and drove in three runs Sunday as the San Diego Padres maintained their lead in the N.L. West with an 11-2 rout of the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.
Jody Reed matched a career-high with three RBIs for San Diego, which remained one game ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Spokane Indian Scott Sanders allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings for the win.

Greg Gagne drove in the tying run and pinch-hitter Chad Curtis drew a bases-loaded walk from John Franco in the eighth inning as Los Angeles rallied to complete a three-game sweep of New York.
Trailing 5-4, Doug Henry walked Eric Karros with one out in the eighth and Franco (3-3) gave up two-out singles to pinch-hitter Tim Wallach and Gagne. Mike Piazza’s infield single loaded the bases before Curtis walked.

Barry Bonds’ consecutive-games streak ended at 357, but substitute Trenidad Hubbard homered and tripled to lead San Francisco a victory over Montreal.
Bonds made pinch-hit appearances in the two previous games while resting his strained left hamstring. But the injured left fielder did not play at all Sunday, ending the longest streak in San Francisco history.

Donne Wall pitched seven strong innings and Jeff Bagwell surpassed 100 RBIs as the Houston Astros opened a 1-1/2-game lead in the N.L. Central with a victory St. Louis.
The Astros have won two straight games over the Cardinals after losing the first seven games of the season series.
Clearing the bases
Brett Butler, who underwent throat-cancer surgery in May, is scheduled to join the Dodgers tonight when they arrive in Montreal and he is likely to be in uniform for Tuesday’s game… . Fred McGriff of the Braves had his consecutive hit streak stopped at seven when he flied out in the fifth inning. … Atlanta’s Chipper Jones went 0 for 4, ending his 18-game streak.
