Johnson Wins 110 Hurdles

Compiled From Wire Services

Allen Johnson, world and Olympic 110-meter hurdles champion, defeated record holder Colin Jackson at the McDonald’s Games.

Johnson pulled away from Jackson and another British rival, Tony Jarrett, to win in a comparatively slow 13.23 seconds. Jarrett placed second in 13.25 at the Don Valley Stadium and Jackson tied for third with American hurdler Steve Brown in 13.36.

Britain’s Linford Christie, the 100 meter champion at the 1992 Olympics, finished third, in what he said would be his last full season. Nigeria’s Osmond Ezinwa won the race in 10.06, with Britain’s Ian Mackie second in 10.17. Christie’s time was 10.19.

It was the first time since 1986, when he lost to Scotsman Allan Wells, that Christie finished behind another British runner in a major outdoor meet.

Tom Pukstys twice broke his United States javelin record with throws of 284 feet, 7 inches, and then 284-10 to beat former world record holder Steve Backley of Britain, whose best was 269-8 for second place.
