Peru’s Congress Bypasses Term Limit
Congress cleared the way Friday for President Alberto Fujimori to seek a third term in office even though Peru’s constitution limits a president to one re-election.
The measure permitting Fujimori to run again in 2000 was approved on a 70-3 vote over the objections of the minority opposition, which walked out of the session as the voting began.
Critics claimed the pro-Fujimori Congress does not have the authority to pass legislation that overrides the constitution.
