Fien Looks Sharp In Vandals Scrimmage
Idaho senior quarterback Ryan Fien continued to look sharp Friday by completing 16 of 21 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns during a preseason scrimmage.
Fien, who was intercepted just once, had six completions of 20 yards or more - including a 25-yard scoring pass to Antonio Wilson and scoring tosses of 27 and 18 yards to Robert Scott.
Fien completed four consecutive passes for 62 yards on one scoring drive against the No. 2 defense and connected on four in a row for 61 yards in another scoring drive against the No. 1 defense.
“I feel I’m ready,” said Fien, a transfer from UCLA. “Physically, we’re ready. We need to clean up some of the mental mistakes.
“The receivers are doing an amazing job. We’ve got some good receivers out there.”
Coach Chris Tormey felt the dog days of August may have caught up to his team.
“I’m glad we weren’t playing today. We were flat,” he said. “We had too many mental mistakes. We’ve got to get better in the next seven days.
“This is our 25th practice. I’m sure they’re tired. We just weren’t very excited about playing football today.”
The first-team defense dominated the No. 2 offense most of the afternoon, holding backup quarterbacks Robert Scott and Darick Pope to just 11 completions in 25 attempts. Scott did launch a 39-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Prestimonico late in the scrimmage, however.
UI opens the regular season Aug. 31 at Wyoming.
