Dollar Falls Against Yen
The dollar slipped against the yen and ended unchanged against the mark Monday despite the German currency’s growing strength over doubts about the prospect of achieving European monetary union in 1999.
The dollar was mixed against other currencies in foreign exchange trading, where the mark’s rising value was the dominant theme, particularly vs. the French franc.
“With no news or data from the U.S. to guide the dollar, U.S. currency was again at the whim” of trading among other currencies, said Tom O’Malley, a senior foreign exchange analyst at Technical Data in Boston.
