Gun Control Award Honors Student
The parents of a Japanese exchange student who was shot and killed in Louisiana four years ago have set up an annual award to honor gun control advocates in the United States.
The $4,000 award, named “Yoshi’s Gift,” will be given annually to an individual or group who has worked to control guns in the United States, Mieko Hattori said Wednesday.
Hattori’s 16-year-old son, Yoshihiro, was shot in Baton Rouge in 1992 by homeowner Rodney Peairs, who was frightened when the boy went to the wrong house while looking for a Halloween party.
Hattori said the first winner of the award will be announced Sept. 15. She said the prize money will come from the $100,000 paid by Peairs’ insurance company. Letterman nuisance in jail near mom’s home Noblesville, Ind.
