Chief To Play In Pacific Cup

An abbreviated summer just got shorter for Ty Jones of the Spokane Chiefs.

Jones, 17, of Eagle River, Alaska, was named Sunday to the U.S. team that will play in next week’s Pacific Cup hockey tournament in Nelson and Castlegar, British Columbia.

A 6-foot-3, 210-pound forward, Jones arrived home from training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sunday and leaves Friday for Chicago, where the U.S. team will practice before flying to Spokane on Sunday.

The team will drive to Nelson from here. The four-nation tournament starts Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Canada, Japan and Finland also are in the under-18 tournament.

“They want me to play pretty much the way I play in Spokane - hit everything that moves,” Jones said Monday.

Jones, who lived in Spokane until the age of 3, said the first evaluation camp in Seattle started a week after the Chiefs’ season ended last May.

He was in Lake Placid, N.Y., and Colorado Springs, with only brief stays at home, while the team went through the selection process.

“I’ve been working out,” he said. “The summer’s gone by real quick, but that’s all right. I feel like this is an honor.”

The Pacific Cup tournament ends with medal games on Sunday, Aug. 18 in Nelson. The Chiefs report for training camp Aug. 22.
