Yogendra Gupta Named Distinguished Professor

Yogendra Gupta, a Washington State University professor of physics and director of the WSU Shock Dynamics Center, has been named the Westinghouse Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering for the 1996-97 academic year.

Gupta is an internationally recognized authority on the response of materials to the dynamic high pressures produced by shock waves.

The professorship provides $25,000 to the recipient to enhance materials research, to build research collaborations with engineers and scientists at Hanford and to support related graduate student research.

Eastern Washington University announced students graduating with a degree in dental hygiene: Tisha Boorman, Barbara Casort, Nicole Elliott, Tammy Frear, Gail Heacox, Janice Helgath, Malaine Hill, Heidi Hruza, Evie Hutton, Yoshie Kamioku, Cathy Krabbenhoft, Mark Lape, Linda LeFevre, Mandana Mahdieh, Tonya Mankins, Kathrine Mercado, Erica Miner, Arlene Rudolph, Lisa Sandberg, Suzanne Shields, Kimberly Stephens, Kisanna Tibor and Jennifer Windle.

Christopher Forster has received the Alumni and Friends of Civil Engineering Scholarship at the University of Washington.

The award includes full tuition and $100 per quarter for books.

A 1992 graduate of Ferris High School, he is the son of Patrick and Barbara Forster, Spokane.

Ryan Picavet, Colville, Wash., has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.

A senior at Colville High School, Picavet will be among 350 outstanding national scholars attending the conference.

Elinor Nuxoll, Spokane, has been appointed media specialist by the American Association of Retired Persons Communications Division. Nuxoll will represent Eastern Washington and will work with volunteers in other AARP programs and chapters in the area.

She previously served as an AARP/ VOTE team member.

Two members of Spokane Communicators, the local chapter of International Training in Communication, won top honors in ITC’s annual regional writing contest. Bonnie Sheridan took first place in non-fiction, and Mae Schaeffer placed first in poetry.

Steven Parker has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army upon graduating from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Parker, an armor officer, is the son of George Parker, Newport Beach, Calif., and Kathy Hubbard, Spokane. He is a 1984 graduate of Deer Park High School and a 1993 graduate of Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colo.

The following Inland Northwest High School students received the Army Reserve National Scholar/ Athlete Award. Their names and high schools are: Kevin Carlin and Julie Weiskopf, Gonzaga Prep; Todd Weger and Jaidean Watson, Deer Park; Luke Kennedy, St. George’s School; Glen Miller and Sarah Pederson, Northwest Christian School; and Dusty Patrick and Katie Putman, Riverside High School.
