Workman Powers Gonzaga To Win

Kevin Workman’s grand slam home run capped a six-run seventh inning at August/A.R.T. Stadium Sunday as Gonzaga University completed a four-game sweep of Saint Mary’s College with a 12-2 West Coast Conference victory.

The Bulldogs (18-23, 6-14) moved into a sixth-place tie with the Gaels (11-29, 6-14).

Workman belted his first career grand slam and his third home run of the season off Timothy Podesta. Tory Wulf went 3 for 4 with three RBI for the Bulldogs.

Chris Pine tossed his first career shut-out as Oregon State defeated Washington State in Pac-10 North baseball at Pullman.

Pine struck out five, walked two, hit two and gave up only four hits en route to his third victory for Oregon State (25-14 overall, 8-8 in the Pac-10 North).

Starting pitcher Heath McLellan took the loss for the Cougars (20-31, 7-9).

Jake Kringen allowed just six hits to lead Washington (23-22, 12-4) to a victory over Portland State (13-30, 5-11) in Pac-10 North baseball at Portland.

Kringen struck out seven and walked one in eight innings, with Cody Morrison gaining his sixth save for Washington.

The Huskies’ Kevin Miller singled across two runs and Ryan Soules tripled home two more in a five-run fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Whitworth 6, Pacific 5 (10)

Larry Turner’s bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Pirates their victory over the visiting Boxers and completed a three-game Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges series sweep.

Whitworth (15-13, 5-7) rallied to score five runs in the bottom tenth after Pacific (12-14, 4-10) pushed across four runs in the top of the inning.
