Highlights Turns 50

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

I recall my childhood trips to the dentist where there would always be a Highlights magazine to greet me in the reception area. I would flip to my favorite pages, “Hidden Pictures,” “The Timbertoes,” “Goofus and Gallant,” and for a few blissful moments forget where I was.

Highlights for Children turns 50 this year and my childhood favorites are still the mainstays of the monthly magazine.

“Our stories and articles embody time-tested values of fairness, honesty and a regard for others,” says editor Kent L. Brown Jr.

Highlights is dedicated to helping children 2 to 12 years develop basic literacy and thinking skills through the enjoyment of an array of fiction and nonfiction stories, vivid illustrations, challenging puzzles and reader contributions.

To order a subscription ($26 per year) or request a complimentary copy, call (800) 255-9517, or write to: Highlights for Children, P.O. Box 182167, Columbus, OH 43218-2167.

Paying for college: As the cost of higher education increases each year, sending a child to college becomes a greater challenge for families.

Sallie Mae, the country’s leading company in education finance, hopes to help with a free guide, “Paying For College.”

The guide helps families estimate current and future college expenses, implement a savings plan, apply for financial aid, choose an education loan, and more.

To order, call (800) 806-3681.

Home management: The Get Organized! News is a monthly newsletter packed with helpful tips on organizing, decluttering and cleaning the home.

A one-year subscription is $14. To order, send your name, address and a check payable to: The Get Organized! News, P.O. Box 144, Gotha, FL 34734.

Don’t forget Mother’s Day: On May 12, you can say “I love you” to mom with a gift basket of roses, and a portion of your purchase will help homeless children across the country.

The “Miracle Rose” from Harry and David company is a miniature coral rose in a rattan basket, ready to bloom indoors and able to be planted outdoors this summer.

For each rose purchased, Harry and David will donate $5 to Kidstart, a Better Homes Fund program linking homeless children with schools and medical services.

The “Miracle Rose” is $31.90 including shipping and handling. To order, call (800) 227-3313. Specify item number 8101H. Order by May 1 to ensure delivery for Mother’s Day.
