Chatfield Commits To Nic

Lake City High School’s Jon Chatfield has orally committed to play basketball for North Idaho College.

Chatfield averaged 22.5 points and 8 rebounds last season and was first team all-state and Inland Empire League. He transferred to Lake City after playing at A-4 Kootenai.

Baseball

North Idaho College swept host College of Southern Idaho 8-3 and 4-3 in a Region 18 doubleheader on Friday.

In the first game, NIC’s Jeff Anstine struck out four and scattered six hits as he moved his record to 3-5. Also in game one, NIC’s Mike Schock drove in two runs without getting a hit.

The second game saw NIC’s Paul Decelle scatter seven hits while striking out six. NIC moved its record to 14-18, 4-10.

Washington State catcher Jason Hairston drove home three runs with a triple and a home run to lead the Cougars past the Beavers in a Pacific-10 Conference North game.

OSU (24-12-1, 7-6) took a 3-0 lead before the Cougars (18-30, 5-8) rallied for eight runs in the fourth inning. Washington State collected seven hits in the rally, including a triple by Hairston that drove home two runs and a single by Mark Bowman that brought in two.

The Cougars scored a single run on Hairston’s homer in the seventh inning. The Beavers answered with single runs in the eighth and ninth to close out the scoring.

Starter Todd Belitz (4-3) was credited with the victory while Oregon State starter Eric Lovinger took the loss (7-2).

After pre-game ceremonies officially christened Gonzaga University’s refurbished baseball facility August/A.R.T. Stadium, the Bulldogs battered three Saint Mary’s College pitchers for 20 hits in a West Coast Conference game halted after six innings due to rain. The Bulldogs (15-23, 3-14 WCC) sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the third inning, then erased any doubt about the outcome as 11 men went to bat in a five-run fifth.

Two-run doubles by Tory Wulf and Donnie Murrell highlighted the third-inning as Gonzaga chased Gaels’ (11-26, 6-11) starter and loser Kevin Lowry, Murrell’s blow the knockout punch as the 10th man to the plate.

CCS’ Rudy Zafras went 3 for 5 on the day to help the Sasquatch defeat Blue Mountain, 4-2.

Pitcher Adam Flohr threw a complete game, scattered four hits, struck out six while walking just two batters.

CCS moved its overall record to 11-11 and 7-6 in the NWAACC East.
