San Antonio Spurs Sign Five; Dennis Rodman Still In Limbo

Compiled From Wire Services

The San Antonio Spurs signed Sean Elliott and four other players Friday, a week before the team begins training camp.

Among those signed was Carl Herrera, who has spent his four years in the league with the Houston Rockets. He averaged 6.8 points and 4.6 rebounds last season while playing alongside Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Spurs also signed Greg “Cadillac” Anderson, Brad Lohaus and Doc Rivers.

The Spurs lately have been enduring the caustic comments of disgruntled forward Dennis Rodman. In interviews, Rodman has demanded a new contract and criticized the play of Robinson, last season’s MVP.

Rodman is listed on the Spurs’ current roster, though his future with the team has been the subject of speculation for months.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed draft picks Bob Sura (Florida State) and Seattle native Donny Marshall (Connecticut).

The Houston Rockets gave Hakeem Olajuwon some front-court help, announcing a multi-year free-agent deal with former Portland power forward Mark Bryant.

Sam Bowie, 34, who was chosen before Michael Jordan in the 1984 NBA draft, announced he was retiring from the NBA after 11 seasons.

The NBA said it will lock out its referees on Sunday following their union’s rejection of a no-strike, no-lockout agreement while a new collective bargaining agreement is being negotiated.
