Newport Knocks Off No. 8 Colfax

Newport quarterback Nate Carrera ran for two touchdowns as the visiting Grizzlies upset Colfax 21-15 Friday on the opening night of Northeast A League football.

The Bulldogs (0-1 in league, 2-1 overall) came into the game as the eighth ranked team in the state, while Newport was winless (1-0, 1-2) after being outscored 51-12 in a pair of non-league games.

Carrera scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards to stake the Grizzlies to a 14-0 lead in the third quarter.

Jacob Keck blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to pull the Bulldogs to within a touchdown at 14-7.

Newport responded with a time-consuming drive which culminated with a 3-yard touchdown run by Doug Knapp to make the score 21-7.

Andy Asbjornsen capped Colfax’s scoring with a 1-yard touchdown plunge in the fourth quarter.

Newport accumulated 147 yards rushing and 113 passing.

Colfax managed just 27 yards on the ground, with Asbjornsen accounting for the team’s only offensive score.

Deer Park 14, Kettle Falls 10

Quarterback Trevor Baker passed for 173 yards and ran for the game-winning touchdown as the visiting Stags rallied to beat the Bulldogs.

Kettle Falls got on the board first, when Curtis Corvino rumbled 7 yards to score the Bulldogs’ only touchdown of the game.

Paul Deakins hauled in a 25-yard pass from Baker to knot the game at 7-7.

Kettle Falls answered with a 40-yard field goal by Jerrad Crandall.

Baker rallied the Stags, running in from one yard out to account for Deer Park’s final score.

Deer Park (1-0, 1-2) racked up 272 yards of total offense.

Kettle Falls (0-1, 1-2) running back Josh Fealy had 117 yards rushing.

Chewelah 48, Medical Lake 21

Cougar running back Cody Katzer ran for 98 yards and two TD’s as Chewelah routed the Cardinals.

Cougar (1-0, 3-0) quarterback Jason Delp was 10-29 passing for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Brett Skok ran for 100 yards and a score.

Carlos Simmons scored two touchdowns for Medical Lake (0-1, 0-2) including a 90-yard kickoff return.

Lakeside 24, Freeman 12

Lakeside punter Ryan Chicoine ran for a 70-yard TD on a botched play in the third quarter as the Eagles beat the visiting Scotties.

Chicoine also kicked a 38-yard field goal and three extra points, while teammates Adam Cummings and Jason Christen both scored touchdowns for Lakeside (1-0, 1-2).

Eagles quarterback George Petticrew threw for two touchdowns, while Freeman’s (0-1, 0-3) Matt Smith ran for two touchdowns and was 7-13 passing for 126 yards.
