Former Sonic Barros Signs Contract With Celtics, Creating A Backcourt Log-Jam
The Boston Celtics signed Dana Barros on Friday to a six-year deal reportedly worth between $21 million and $22 million, bringing the sharpshooting guard home to the city where he grew up and went to college.
Barros is Boston College’s all-time leading scorer, and played four years for Seattle before moving to Philadelphia. He made $950,000 last season when he averaged 20.6 points and 7.5 assists per game for the 76ers en route to his first All-Star Game.
While Barros had been negotiating with his old team as well as the Washington Bullets, the Celtics waited until Tuesday before making an offer.
But Barros, at 5-foot-11, doesn’t help with the size disadvantage the Celtics have in the backcourt with Dee Brown and Sherman Douglas, both 6-1. General manager M.L. Carr said he was still looking at what to do about that, including, reportedly, shopping Douglas.
Oakland and San Jose are in a high-stakes bidding war for the Golden State Warriors, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Both cities’ offers are $20 million, the newspaper said, citing sources it did not identify.
