Brew Crew Postpones Celebration In Boston
American League
Ricky Bones scattered seven hits in his third complete game Monday night to postpone Boston’s clinching celebration and give the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-1 victory over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Crates of champagne were carted into the Red Sox clubhouse earlier in the day, and a bus load of police arrived at Fenway Park at game time in preparation for the party. With Boston trailing 6-1 after seven innings, police - some on horseback - ringed the field to make their presence known.
But the celebration will have to wait at least another day.
Tim Wakefield (16-5) struggled for the fifth time in seven starts and watched his ERA balloon from a league-leading 2.50 to 2.71. He allowed six runs and 10 hits, walking three and striking out five.

Chicago
Albert Belle hit his major league-best 40th and 41st homers, Tony Pena had four hits and Ken Hill pitched a six-hitter as Cleveland routed Chicago.
Hill (3-1) struck out eight, walked one and pitched his first complete game since July 7, 1994, when he was with Montreal.
Belle became the first Indians’ player to hit 40 homers since Rocky Colavito had 42 in 1959.

After being shut out for six innings by a rookie called up Sept. 1, New York rallied for eight runs off reliever Danny Cox to beat Toronto.
David Cone (16-8) allowed six hits in eight innings, striking out five and walking two.
New York had been stymied for six innings by 24-year-old rookie Jeff Ware, but manager Cito Gaston removed him after 119 pitches with Toronto holding a 1-0 lead.
Athletics 4, Angels 0
Oakland, Calif.
Doug Johns pitched a two-hitter and Oakland took advantage of Chuck Finley’s wildness to down California, which has lost 23 of 31.
Johns (5-1) allowed only singles by Jim Edmonds in the first inning and Tim Salmon in the seventh. Edmonds was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double and Salmon was picked off first.
Royals 16-4, Twins 7-10
Kansas City
Pedro Munoz drove in three runs with three hits to help LaTroy Hawkins gain his first major league victory as Minnesota beat Kansas City for a doubleheader split.
The Royals had 20 hits in the first game, winning 16-7 and sending the Twins to their sixth straight loss.
Hawkins (1-3), making his fourth major league start, gave up four runs and 10 hits in 5-2/3 innings and Pat Mahomes finished for his third save.

Bobby Bonilla had three RBIs, including a two-run homer, to back the strong pitching of rookie Jimmy Haynes as Baltimore beat Detroit.
With two outs in the sixth, Rafael Palmeiro singled off Detroit starter Filepe Lira (9-11). Bonilla then hit the first pitch into the second deck in right field for his ninth homer and a one-run lead.
