At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Glen Tuckett, a former coach and athletic director at Brigham Young University, was plucked from retirement to become interim athletic director at Alabama, which has been hit with probation for the first time.

Tuckett, 67, was Alabama president Roger Sayers’ first choice to replace Hootie Ingram, who took another job in the department this month following NCAA sanctions against the football team.

Tuckett, 67, said he will serve until a permanent replacement is named, perhaps as long as one year…. At Rieti, Italy, Olympic champion Linford Christie of Britain won the 100 meters the Rieti track and field meet in 10.20 seconds and afterward, reiterated it is unlikely he will defend his Olympic title next year at Atlanta…. Herb Brooks, the 1980 U.S. Olympic coach and ex-NHL coach, joined the Penguins as a scout.

Andre Ware the 1989 Heisman Trophy winner who was cut by the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, signed a two-year contract with the CFL’s Ottawa Rough Riders…. Dick Schultz, 66, former executive director of the NCAA, took over as the executive director of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Golden State guard Latrell Sprewell was arrested on traffic violations and for allegedly threatening a police officer who chased his truck. Sprewell, an All-Star entering his fourth season, was scheduled to appear today in Oakland (Calif.) Municipal Court. He was released from jail Sunday after posting more than $6,000 in bail, including paying a $956 warrant for driving on a suspended license… . Bellingham defeated visiting Boise 2-0 in the first game of their best-of-three Northwest League baseball playoff series.
