Red Sox Lessen A’S Chances, Win 7-4

American League Jose Canseco hit a three-run homer in the 14th inning Tuesday night to give the Boston Red Sox a 7-4 win over Oakland at Fenway Park and hurt the Athletics’ longshot wild card chances.

Canseco hit his 22nd homer on a 1-0 pitch off Carlos Reyes (3-5) with two outs after Troy O’Leary singled and Mo Vaughn walked.

It was the fifth time this season that Boston had won a home game with a homer.

Indians 7, Brewers 3 Milwaukee

Eddie Murray had four hits and drove in four runs as Cleveland recorded its 14th win in 18 games.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 (11) Arlington, Texas

Mike LaValliere homered for the first time in more than a year, a two-out drive in the 11th inning that led Chicago past Texas and extended its winning streak to seven.

Royals 9, Blue Jays 8 (10) Kansas City

Bob Hamelin homered leading off the 10th inning, giving Kansas City a wild win over Toronto and eliminating the defending World Series champions from the A.L. East race.

Tigers 6, Twins 4 Minneapolis

Rookie C.J. Nitkowski pitched five innings to gain his first A.L. victory as Detroit beat Minnesota for its first two-game winning streak in more than a month.

Bye bye Bronx?

The New York Yankees are considering a new site for Yankee Stadium, although a decision has not been made to leave the Bronx.

David Sussman, the Yankees’ executive vice president and general counsel, said plans for renovation of Yankee Stadium would aggravate traffic and parking problems at the ballpark.

The team’s lease with the city expires in 2002, and Sussman said, “It is time to consider all available alternatives.”.

Brewers staying put?

Milwaukee Brewers president Bud Selig drew applause when he told lawmakers he hopes to keep the team in Milwaukee. Critics gained cheers by calling a new stadium overpriced and unrealistic.

About 300 people attended the hearing at the Italian Community Center, the first of three hearings this week on the financing package for the proposed $250 million ballpark expected to come to a vote this month in the Legislature.

DiSarcina makes progress

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina played catch with a glove on his injured left hand for the first time Tuesday, a major step in his recovery from a torn thumb ligament. The California Angels hope he can spend a week playing in Arizona later this month before returning for the playoffs.
