Nascar Plans Probe Of Accident
NASCAR president Bill France said the organization will examine the car and the accident in which Mint Hill resident Russell Phillips was killed during a Sportsman Division race Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“We’re not taking it as one of those things that happens all the time. We never take that approach,” France said. “Anytime we have a serious accident we look at the car to see if there is any way we can make it better.”
Phillips was killed when his car hit the Turn 4 wall, turned upside down and the roof was sheared off.
Louis Meyer, the first three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 (1928, 1933. 1936), died in a Las Vegas hospital. He was 91.
Meyer was the first driver to drink milk in Victory Lane, a tradition that continues today.
Mark Martin overwhelmed the field in winning the All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 Busch Grand National stock car race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Spokane’s Chad Little finished 34th.
At Sonoma, Calif., Doug George clinched the NASCAR Winston West Series title, beating Butch Gilliland by 2.94 seconds in the Sonoma 100.
