Johnson Shut Out, But Sc Wins

Kyle Wachholtz threw two touchdown passes and LaVale Woods ran for two scores as fifth-ranked Southern California defeated host California 26-16 Saturday at Berkeley, but Trojans receiver Keyshawn Johnson had his record streak of 100-yard games snapped.

Johnson, who had at least 100 yards in catches in an NCAA-record 12 straight games, was held to five receptions for 57 yards, his lowest output since the opening game of last season.

Wachholtz had scoring passes of 19 yards to John Allred and 21 yards to Tyler Cashman and Woods ran for touchdowns of 4 and 19 yards as the Trojans (3-0 Pac-10, 5-0) overcame 140 yards in penalties.

California (0-2, 1-4) got a 35-yard scoring pass from Pat Barnes to Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown by Na’il Benjamin and a 39-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell.

The Trojans got 151 yards on 30 carries from Deion Washington.

Eric Abrams kicked three field goals and the Cardinal (2-0, 4-0-1) converted two turnovers into 10 points in a 2:09 span of the second quarter, then held on to beat the Sun Devils (1-3, 2-4) at Tempe, Ariz.

Stanford was projected by many to finish last in the league this year but instead is off to its best start since the 1951 team won its first nine games.
