Club Wants To Turn Up Heat On Push-Up Bras
If you are appalled at all the cleavage-creating, waist-pinching, butt-boosting shenanigans of the ‘90s, this may be for you: a bra-burning ceremony.
Not just any bra, though. It has to be a Wonderbra - or any other brand of padded, push-up bra.
It’s part of a publicity stunt by the owners of Polly Esther’s, the ‘70-sensibility dance club in New York. If you send your bra and a book of matches to Polly Esther’s, the club will send you a “Keeper of the ‘70s Flame” card that will allow you into a bra-burning ceremony and earn you a VIP pass to one of the two Polly Esther’s clubs in New York.
But it’s not just for publicity, owners Bob Watman and Tim Ouellette say. It’s a stand for women’s rights.
“The resurgence in the ‘70s kitschy fashions and pop icons is so much fun that I think it is easy to overlook how many great, although perhaps painful, strides this country took during that era,” Watman says.
“We had some great ideals then, such as … a person’s value was not measured by cleavage,” Ouellette adds.
“Can you imagine what women would have done with a Wonderbra back then?
“We just thought we would bring it up for discussion.”
