Knights Block Wv To Retain 2nd Place

Angela Overdorff had 11 blocks Thursday as second-place East Valley (6-1) overcame host and third-place West Valley 15-13, 11-15, 15-5, 16-14 in a key Frontier League volleyball match.

The Eagles (4-3) trailed the first game 10-0 before bouncing back for a close score. WV also trailed the closing game 12-8 before rebounding.

Deb Asbury had 13 kills and three aces, and Jennifer Kann 18 assists and three digs for EV. Arin Craig led WV with 10 kills and six blocks.

North Central (6-4) took a big step toward assuring itself a playoff spot with a 15-5, 6-15, 15-8, 15-10 Greater Spokane League win over sixth-place Mead (4-7).

The Indians tied Lewis and Clark and idle University for third place. Jessica Sanborn had nine kills and 11 digs for Mead. No statistics were reported for NC.

At Gonzaga Prep, the first-place Bullpups (11-0) defeated LC in three games. No details were reported.

College volleyball

Tami Burchard had 23 kills and Northern Arizona (4-1, 8-5) had 14 aces during a 9-15, 10-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-9 Big Sky Conference win over visiting Eastern Washington at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Katrina Carlson had a career-high 18 kills for the Eagles (0-4, 3-12). Kim Exner of EWU added 15 kills, and Stefanie McCall 12 kills and 13 digs.Susan Brandell added 18 kills and nine blocks for NAU.

Also in the Big Sky, Annette Hill had 15 kills as Weber State (2-3, 11-5) shocked visiting Idaho, 15-9, 15-8, 12-15, 5-15, 15-11 at Ogden, Utah.

The Vandals (3-1, 14-4) dropped a second consecutive match for the first time in 1 seasons. Tzvetelina Yanchulova had a match-high 26 kills and 13 digs for the Vandals.

Prep cross country

Class AA and defending state champion EV opened its Frontier slate with wins over Riverside (2-2) and Cheney at EV.

Defending state champion Jeannette Zimmer of Cheney (1-3) won the 3-mile race in 19 minutes, 42 seconds. The host Knights took the next two spots, with Ann Marie Adams (20:19) and Angie Simmers (20:33).

In other girls meets, Jessica Riehle (18:11) and Heather Harmon (18:58) led first-place and third-ranked WV (3-0) to a win at Clarkston. Jennifer Rea (19:25) of the Bantams (0-3) finished third.

At Pullman, freshmen Eryn Cook (20:36) and Erin McMahon (20:52) gave the host Greyhounds (1-2) a win over Colville (2-1).

In boys meets, winner Jon Ashcraft (16:42) and third-place Nick Barth (17:03) lifted No. 7 Riverside (3-1) to wins over Cheney (2-2) and host EV (1-1). Runner-up Chris Henderson (16:50) helped EV over Cheney.

At Clarkston, Matt Wheeler (15:37) led teammates Clayton Holmes (15:55) and Levi Lounder (16:12) across the line as second-ranked WV (3-0) beat host Clarkston (1-2) and remained in first place.

At Pullman, Brandon Wisniew (17:17) of the host Greyhounds (1-2) edged Kory Sullivan of Colville by one-half second for the title. The Indians (0-3) took third place with Skyler Johnson (17:31), but a pack at the next seven places swung the meet in Pullman’s direction.

Prep girls soccer

Dawn Salfer’s second-half goal allowed WV (3-1-3) to tie visiting EV at 1 in a Frontier match that shook up the standings.

Deer Park/Riverside and Cheney also won league matches, meaning DP/R (6-1-0) tied EV (5-0-2) for first place with 12 points apiece. Cheney (4-2-1), with nine points, jumped into a third-place tie with WV.

The Knights dominated the first half and led 1-0 on a Sara Bartlett goal.

In other matches, Jill Thompson had three assists and one goal off a header as DP/R took a 6-0 win over host Pullman (0-6-1).

Lisa Anderson scored twice as visiting Cheney beat Medical Lake 3-1. Amanda Carson of the Cardinals (2-5-0) scored her first goal of the year.
