Bedroom Blackened After Boy, 3, Sets His Bedding On Fire

From Staff And Wire Reports

Fire blackened a bedroom in a south Spokane house on Saturday morning after a 3-year-old boy set his room on fire.

John and Pat Haskins fled the house they rented at 524 S. Fiske with their son about 9:40 a.m. They called the fire department from a neighbor’s house as flames crept up the walls in the boy’s bedroom and engulfed his mattress.

Pat Haskins, who broke out the bedroom window to ventilate the room before leaving the house, suffered minor cuts and smoke inhalation. She was treated by medics at the scene and released.

Battalion Chief Joe Stapleton said the fire started when the boy set his bedding on fire.

The boy and his parents were referred to the Spokane Fire Department’s juvenile fire stopper program. Red Cross was called to help find new bedding for the family.

Stapleton said the house had a smoke detector but it was not working. , DataTimes
