Guards Get Lesson In Human Rights
Human rights activists on Tuesday tried to teach prison guards to respect the rights of inmates in this country’s violent and overcrowded prisons.
About 50 prison officials sat in a conference room at Andres Bello Catholic University and listened as human rights experts spoke of ways to protect inmates from their own violence and from abuse by guards.
“We are learning about the value of human dignity,” said Julio Guerrero, chief warden of Caracas’ Catia prison, one of the most violent in the country.
