Vulcans Put Hold On WSU
Mike Kinkade flew out with two out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning Tuesday as visiting Washington State lost to Hawaii-Hilo 4-3 in the first game of a non-league doubleheader.
Results of the second game were not available at press time.
Trailing the Vulcans 4-0, the Cougars (5-12) struck back in the sixth. Ken Cameron tripled to right field to score Mike Wetmore. Cameron came home on Josh Hamik’s two-out single, but Kinkade was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on the same play.
In the WSU ninth, Jim Horner singled, and Rob Ryan and pinch hitter Top Cody walked to load the bases. Ken Coyaso relieved Vulcans starter Keiki Mattson, who had walked six and struck out five.
Cameron walked to bring home Horner and make the score 4-3. But Kinkade flew to right to end the game.
WSU’s Eric Estes (0-3) went the distance, scattering 10 hits, allowing four runs, walking two and striking out two. Mattson won for Hilo (11-13).WSU continues its seven-game tour to Hawaii with another double header at Hawaii-Hilo today.
Boys soccer
Trevor Harelson scored three firsthalf goals to lead visiting Cheney over West Valley 5-0 and give the Blackhawks (2-0) an early lead on the Frontier League field.
Mike Kisslinger had two assists and one goal for Cheney, which scored twice off set plays. Cheney goalkeeper Rod Just had seven saves. WV is 0-1-1.
At Colville, Clint Burgess snapped a scoreless tie with a goal at 54 minutes, then added another less than 4 minutes later to lead East Valley (1-0-1) to a 4-0 win over the Indians (0-2).
Tory Swenson and Shawn Cecil added insurance goals for the Knights, who had a 25-12 shots-ongoal edge.
Ryan Baker scored twice and Chris Koesel had one goal and two assists to lead Riverside/Deer Park (1-1) to a 5-1 win over visiting Clarkston (0-1).
Greg Ochoa added one goal and one assist for R/DP, which led 4-0 after one half. Mike Koontz, on an assist from Shawn Sattler, scored for the Bantams.
