Street Takes A Spill
Downhill champion Picabo Street escaped serious injury during a high-speed spill while trying to match the winning time of Katja Seizinger in the women’s super giant slalom race at the World Cup finals.
The 23-year-old star from Sun Valley, Idaho, the first American woman to win the World Cup downhill title, suffered only a badly bruised right shoulder in the fall near the bottom of the Stelvio course.
The accident initially caused serious concern. The race was suspended for 15 minutes, as Street was on the snow motionless.
Seizinger, the Olympic downhill champion from Germany, won the race by beating Austrian Renate Goetschl by .20 seconds and clinched the women’s superG title.
In addition to the injury to Street, Shannon Nobis of Park City, Utah, hurt her left knee in a fall near the bottom of the twisting course.
