Octagon Picnic Table Makes The Most Of Space

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Because it provides a lot of room in a minimum amount of space, an octagon picnic table is ideal for dining al fresco.

Plus, when eight are dining, everyone gets their own side.

Made of redwood for its beauty and its durability outdoors, this table can seat eight (or more) comfortably on a combination of benches and stools. The three different pieces in the set are designed to be inexpensive, sturdy, weatherresistant and simple to build.

With a little work, most do-ityourselfers can finish the entire set in a weekend or two.

This project requires only common tools and calls for basic materials: standard 2-by-4’s and 2-by-6’s of redwood lumber, along with dowels, screws, nuts and bolts.

Building it is a matter of making several straight cuts from redwood and then sanding, assembling and finishing. The curved cuts on the benches and stools are traced from full-size patterns.

The standard set-up has two twoseat benches and four single-seat stools, but any combination of twoseaters and single-seaters can be built.

When finished, the table measures 55 inches across and stands 30 inches high, and the stools are 20 inches wide by 18 inches high.

The Octagon Picnic Table plan, No. 840, is $6.50 and includes stepby-step directions with 15 photos, traceable patterns, exploded diagrams and a shopping list and cutting schedule.

Plans are also available for a rectangular picnic table, No. 62, and a round picnic table, No. 239. They are $6.50 each.

In addition, a catalog picturing hundreds of other do-it-yourself projects for spring and summer is $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
