Bennett To Coach Wosc

Former Whitworth College quarterback Blaine Bennett is the new head football coach at Western Oregon State College.

Bennett, 30, replaces Randy Wegner, under whom he was an assistant the last three years..

WOSC president Bill F. Cowart said Bennett was selected following a national search.

“Coach Bennett will ensure the continued development of our football program, making it truly competitive in our league,” Cowart said.

Bennett, from Walla Walla, set a Whitworth passing record in 1986 that has since been broken. He played for his father, Shorty Bennett, as a senior in 1987.

The new WOSC coach has extensive credentials as an assistant, including a stint at the University of Idaho.

Basketball

Tatum McCullough, a junior from Spokane (North Central High School), was selected the Most Valuable Player and honorary team captain for the Central Washington University women’s team.

McCullough led the Wildcats in 3-point shooting (25 of 76), assists (106), steals (34) and minutes (939). Her assists rank fourth on CWU’s single-season list.

Indoor track

Former Rogers High School star Jessica Fry, a freshman at Alabama, placed second last weekend in the 5,000 meters at the Southeastern Conference indoor championships to earn a berth in the NCAA Indoor meet this weekend in Indianapolis. Fry finished in 16:54.

Lacrosse

The Northwest collegiate lacrosse league has an immediate need for referees.

Greg Johnson said it helps to have played or officiated the sport “so you have some knowledge of the rules,” but training will be provided. Officials will work the Eastern Washington area. Info: Johnson, (509) 838-2303.

Rifle

The Cheney American Legion Junior Team, led by Hatti Ponti, placed second out of 11 teams in the Washington State Junior Indoor Position Championships last month.

Competition in the .22 target rifle shoot was held in Pasco and Centralia.

Ponti was first in the sub-junior class (14 and under), earning an invitation to the National Junior Olympics Rifle Championships this month in Colorado Springs.

Also on the runner-up team are Matt Miller, who was second, and Stephanie Goeden, eighth, both in the masters class. Christopher Houser was fifth in masters.

Other Cheney placers: Jesse George, first, and Gavin Peterson, second, prone class; Tim Miller, fourth, Phil Chambers, 7th, B class; Jenny Havercroft, seventh, A class; Rachael Westergren, eighth, expert class.

Skiing

Sixteen area racers have been selected to represent the Pacific Northwest Ski Association in Junior Olympics and Western States Championships races through March 20.

Competing in the J-1 and J-2 (ages 15-18) Junior Olympics at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon through Wednesday are (with ski team and school): Julie Jensen, Mt. Hood Academy, Ferris; Vickie Bates, Schweitzer Alpine Racing School, Gonzaga Prep; Cody Smith, Spokane Ski Racing Association, North Central; Jamin Patton, SSRA, G-Prep; Mike Dix, SSRA, Ferris; Joe Welch, SARS, University of Washington; Heath Peterson, SARS, Sandpoint; Jamie Landwehr, SARS, Coeur d’Alene; Brian Dillon, SARS, Sandpoint.

In the J-3 (13-14) Junior Olympics March 17-20 at Sun Valley, Idaho: Molly Maixner, SARS, All Saints; Marian McConnaughey, SSRA, Ferris; Lincoln Ellis, SSRA, Chase Middle School.
