Picture Yourself With Your Pet In Event For Special Olympics

Staff Reports

Here, Fido. You too, Fluffy and Buttercup.

It’s time for all you critters to shine.

Get your owner gussied up - a good brushing should do the trick - and bring her or him to University City Mall. You can have your picture taken together and raise money for a worthy cause.

U-City merchants, Tidyman’s and Northwest Seed and Pet are sponsoring “Special Pets and Special People for Special Olympics.” The fund-raiser takes place today and Sunday and again next Saturday at U-City.

For a $10 donation, Mark Bertoldi Photography will take pictures of pets of all sizes and their owners. The money goes to Inland Northwest Area Special Olympics, a non-profit organization that sponsors sports programs for athletes with special needs. You’ll get two 8-by-10 black and white copies of the photo.

Large pets - horses, llamas and the like - and their owners will be photographed from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each day outside the mall. Small pets and their owners can have their pictures taken between 11:30 and 6 p.m. today and next Saturday and between noon and 5 p.m. Sunday in front of U-City Pets in the mall.

Quilt show, raffle

Holman Gardens Retirement Community is sponsoring a quilt show next Saturday, at Spokane Valley Baptist Church, 1222 S. McDonald Road.

The show, which runs from from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will feature about 50 hand-made quilts owned by residents of the retirement center. Most of the quilts were made by the exhibitors, said Diane Keener, Holman Gardens activity director. A few are family heirlooms that have passed down from the residents’ mothers, aunts or other relatives, she said.

A full-size bed quilt and a quilted wall hanging will be raffled during the show. Admission is $1. Proceeds will be used to buy new chairs for the retirement center’s fellowship room, Keener said.
