Highlights from the past week in the Idaho Legislature

They said it

“Mr. Speaker, I’m going to change my name to Simplot.” - Rep. Bill Sali, R-Meridian, responding to Rep. Tom Dorr’s argument that changing a name in a will would accomplish the same end as a bill Sali proposed.

Votes

Here are some of North Idaho lawmakers’ votes this past week:

More and less: HB283, which would establish new child-staff ratios for day-care centers, passed the House 56-14 and now heads to the Senate. The bill would require more staff per child for infants, but less for older children and mixed age groups.

Voting for the bill were Republican Reps. Jeff Alltus, Tom Dorr, Hilde Kellogg, Wayne Meyer and Don Pischner and Democrats Jim Stoicheff and Carol Pietsch. Voting against were Democrats Charles Cuddy, June Judd, and Marvin Vandenberg.

Married or not: HB176, eliminating recognition of common-law marriages, passed the Senate on a 20-14 vote. It had already passed the House. Republican Sen. Gordon Crow voted in favor. Voting against were Democrats Marguerite McLaughlin, Tim Tucker and Mary Lou Reed and Republican Clyde Boatright.

All forgiven: SB1142, which gives businesses immunity for voluntary disclosures of their environmental violations, passed 28-7 in the Senate and now goes to the House. Voting in favor were Republican Sens. Clyde Boatright and Gordon Crow. Voting against: Democrats Marguerite McLaughlin, Mary Lou Reed and Tim Tucker.
