Area Military Personnel Receive Several Awards

The following Inland Northwest military persons have received awards:

Seaman Recruit Dieter Redweik, son of Jimmy and Shelley Benbow, Kennewick, received the Navy League Award upon graduation from Basic Enlisted Submarine School, Groton, Conn. The award is given for demonstrating superior leadership, academic proficiency and military bearing.

Petty Officer 1st Class Walter Miller, son of Pauline Short, Post Falls, received a Letter of Appreciation for superior performance of duty while serving with the Navy aboard the destroyer USS Leftwich, based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He is a 1980 graduate of Lakeland High School, Rathdrum, Idaho.

Lt. j.g. David Buchholz, son of Les and Judy Buchholz, Spokane, received the Navy Achievement Medal for superior performance as a data processing officer with Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 132, Naval Air Station Whidbey Harbor, Oak Harbor, Wash. He is a 1985 graduate of University High School.

Maj. Dan Willis, son of Robert and Louise Willis, Spokane, received the Navy Achievement Medal for superior performance of duty while serving as a Marine Liason officer with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan.

Sgt. Richard Abken, son of Georgia Stephens, Richland, received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal for honest and faithful service during a three-year period. He is stationed with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Lance Cpl. Sean Harris, received a Certificate of Commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned with 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He is a 1991 graduate of Kiona Benton High School, Benton City, Wash.

Sgt. Travis Russell, son of Ronald Russell and Pennie Shepard, Clarkston, Wash., received a Certificate of Commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz. He is a 1988 graduate of Lewiston High School, Lewiston, Idaho.

Lt. Jon Smith, son of Joseph and Ina Smith, Greenacres, received the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving as a project officer with Commander, Fleet Air, Mediterranean, Naples, Italy, where he is stationed. He is a 1984 graduate of Central Valley High School.
